Novosibirsk, June 14, 2024: EL 6 Novosibirsk planted 150 pyramidal poplars at Evsino station.
The location for the new forest belt was chosen by residents. The pits for seedlings were excavated by the local council, while the poplars were planted by El 6 Novosibirsk volunteers,
the campaign involving 20 people in all. Everyone had something to do, namely, to unload the seedlings from the truck, take the roots from protective mesh, place trees in the planting holes and fill them with soil, during the whole day. The result of painstaking work was a wonderful green line of poplars south of the station; they will take root and gain strength for further growth.
Mature pyramidal poplars reach a height of 22 to 30 meters, emitting seven times more oxygen than spruce and four times more than pine. They also trap gaseous and solid substances suspended in the air and do not produce cotton (fluff). Pyramidal poplars are therefore effectively used to create protective barriers along highways or railroads and at neighborhood boundaries.
The planting process was supported by Irina Khomyakova, an Evsino resident and a landscaper at El 6 Novosibirsk General Service Department. Having vast background and expertise, she claims that the forest location has been very well chosen: “This is a lowland, and after rains water always accumulates there. There is no need to water the trees. Atmospheric precipitation would be sufficient for the trees to receive moisture from spring to autumn.”
Pyramid poplars are a common landscape variety in the southern regions of Russia, but these beautiful trees are seldom found in northern latitudes. The young poplars planted in Evsino were bred by a Ural breeder and grown in the Altai Territory; the two-meter seedlings are low-maintenance and have been adapted to the harsh Siberian climate.
Semen Dyadyk, an activist of the El 6 Novosibirsk Youth Council, also took part in the environmentalism campaign: “It is nice to make a significant contribution to the landscaping of my home region with my own hands. I will come here more often. If I am lucky enough to plant trees, I will definitely take care of them, checking out how they are taking root and how they are growing.”
The environmental campaign to provide verdure at the Evsino station is another stage in El 6 Novosibirsk’s comprehensive program aimed at preserving and restoring the natural resources of the Novosibirsk region and protecting the environment. The company is a member of the regional representative office of the National Council for Corporate Volunteering, every year its employees and old workers participating in national campaigns to clean up riverbanks, plant trees and improve the Iskitim District.
